Leather Deskpad FAQs
Which notebook cover fits an A5, Field Notes, or Leuchtturm1917 journal?
Notebook covers ship in a separate family of collections, each sized for a specific notebook format. For A5 notebooks, see our Leather A5 Notebook Covers, which fit the standard A5 footprint plus dedicated covers for Leuchtturm1917 A5, Rhodia A5, Moleskine Large, and Hobonichi Cousin.
For the smaller pocket format, see our Leather Field Notes Covers (sized for the 3.5 by 5.5 inch Field Notes booklet) and the Leather Leuchtturm1917 Covers (pocket and medium-size hardcover fits). All covers are cut from the same thick full-grain leather as the deskpad and valet tray, so they age into the same patina on your desk.
How does leather age on a desk with daily use?
Beautifully, and faster than almost any other surface. A desk accessory sees your hand oils, cup condensation, the edge of a coffee mug, and the weight of a laptop or keyboard every single day. Full-grain leather absorbs those trace oils into its top layer and darkens from a pale tan toward a deep honey or chocolate tone over the first 6 to 12 months of daily use.
A scratch from a mug slid across the mousepad blends into the patina rather than standing out as damage. A coffee ring on a coaster softens into a natural mark within a week. The deskpad develops a lighter patch where your wrists rest and a darker patch where your coffee sits, and both are part of the character. Two years in, the set looks uniquely yours in a way no synthetic desk accessory ever will.
How are the desk accessories constructed, is there any stitching?
Construction varies by piece and we build each one to the strength it actually needs. The Leather Deskpad and the Leather Mousepad are single slabs of 9oz full-grain leather, cut clean with no stitching and no surface treatment on the edges. Nothing to catch on your keyboard or mouse.
The Leather Valet Tray is a single piece of leather that folds up into a tray shape using four solid-brass snaps at the corners; no stitching holds the shape, the snaps do. The Leather Toiletry Bag, Leather Pencil Case, and Leather Passport Holder are saddle-stitched by hand with waxed thread, the same build used on our wallets. Coasters are hand-cut and either blank, hand-pressed, or foil-stamped, no stitching needed on a single-layer disc.
What leather do you use for your desk and office accessories?
Every piece in this collection is cut from full-grain leather sourced from Seidel tannery. Full-grain is the top outermost layer of the hide, left intact with all its natural fibre. It is the strongest, most durable grade of leather and the only grade that develops a rich patina as it ages.
The Leather Deskpad and Leather Mousepad are cut from 9oz belt-weight hide, the same thick stock we use on our leather belts. The Leather Passport Holder, Leather Toiletry Bag, Leather Pencil Case, and Leather Valet Tray use the same full-grain stock sized to their build. We do not use top-grain (sanded to hide flaws and weaker as a result), bonded leather, or genuine leather (glued scraps that typically split within 1 to 2 years).
